The only downside I could see this helmet having at this stage in its development is accidentally rupturing the outer skin by cutting it somehow. That and I wonder if the skin would be destroyed after one impact. Although most manufacturers do recommend you replace your helmet after a single serious impact.

Dont know if speed would matter. If you are traveling at a higher rate of speed, the skin will still do its job. Even if the skin of the helmet did rip, the skin tearing would be absorbing energy that would otherwise be absorbed into the helmet and eventually the body.
Something else to think about is with all the new nano-technology being developed, it wouldnt surprise me if someone develops a nano-coating for helmets that might essentially work like a roller bearing "coating" on the helmet surface. Either that or maybe something like a full body suit that reacts to stimulus similar to the shear-thickening fluid used in the new-ish liquid bullet proof vest. Could make the body rigid so the forces endured during impact could be absorbed over the length of the body instead of one small point like the neck or an elbow.
